Then They Came for Me

I was reading over CNN, and got the inspiration to seek out this poem I learned in school a few years ago:

First They Came for the Jews, By Pastor Martin Niemöller

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

For those of you who were on the winning side on Tuesday, and need a little help with the analogy, here's my modern revision.

First they came for the Arabs
and I did not speak out
because I was not an Arab.
Then they came for the homosexuals
and I did not speak out
because I was not homosexual.
Then they came for the liberals
and I did not speak out
because I was not a liberal.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.
